Sony CEO Kaz Hirai remarked at CES that sales for the PS Vita were not all he would want them to be. However, he’s taking a long tail view of the console, noting that while the PS3 had a rough beginning, the company now considers it a success.

“I would say it’s at the low end of what we expected,” said Hirai of Vita sales to the Wall Street Journal, adding, “Long-term is what is important.”

When asked about Nvidia’s just-announced Project Shield, Hirai wasn’t phased. “I wasn’t as surprised as you might think,” said Hirai to PCWorld. “If you look back through the pages of history, there have been other attempts.”

“[The market is] difficult to break into,” added Hirai. “I’ve managed this industry, so I know.”
