RuneScape Producer Addresses Hero Pass Outrage: “We Are Not Done”

Pop Quiz: What massacred more players? The Hero Pass update or the Falador Massacre of 2006?

The reception to RuneScape’s latest update Hero Pass has been overwhelmingly negative. All over social media, players have been sharing their absolute disdain for the update which they have found to have been vastly misrepresented from what was originally announced. Instead of a casual way to participate in all areas of the game, it is a ‘FOMO’ inducing update that seems predatory with its limited-time rewards. These rewards were meant to be obtainable in the future, and it has since been announced that that may not be the case. This means that many players will feel like they need to pay real money so that players do not miss out.

This backlash was so large that today the Executive Producer, Mod Keeper released a statement today regarding the feedback from players.

The statement read as follows

To the RuneScape Community,

With regard to the recent Hero Pass launch on Monday 4th of September; we hear you loud and clear. We are not done, and we will provide further detail tomorrow.
Mod Keeper

RuneScape Executive Producer

People were quick to mock this announcement as being ‘too long to read,’ ‘a paragraph too long,’ and ‘pointless.’ Unless Hero Pass is wholly removed or significantly altered to bring it in line with the communities’ reasonable expectations, there is nothing that Jagex can do to help the situation.

With this being the most likely outcome, this announcement has players comically stating that it sounds almost threatening. “We are not done…” sounds like things could potentially get a whole lot worse. Whilst we have to wait until tomorrow to see what Jagex has to say, players are making the best of a bad situation and speculating as to what the further details could include.

At the very least, this backlash has led to Mod Keeper speaking out publicly, which has surprised the community as this is not something that he has done often before. This illustrates that Jagex is taking the severity of this reaction seriously and, in turn, will hopefully rectify it. Either way, tomorrow, we will find out if the Hero Pass update will massacre more players than the Falador Massacre ever did.
