Earlier this morning, Nintendo held a Nintendo Direct video session where the company revealed a new project for the Nintendo 3DS that would bring one of its most original franchises to a close… no, not Mario.

Nintendo announced a new Professor Layton game in collaboration with the developers at Level-5, one that is being dubbed as his “last adventure.” Whether that means he’ll never come back or not hasn’t been determined; if it sells well then never say never.

The game is going under the name of Professor Layton and the Legacy of Super Civilization A (it’s likely to change) with a planned arrival sometime in 2013. The game should involve a number of puzzles to solve as well as a storyline that will draw Layton’s legacy to a close with some respect — or perhaps leave the door open to an expansion on the forthcoming Wii U console.

Aside from that, the only other noteworthy news to come out of Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Animal Crossing coming out for 3DS in Japan on November 8th. No word yet on a U.S. release.
