Contra Coming Back Next Year?

The devs of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow may move onto a new edition in Konami's classic series.

The team over at MercurySteam is keeping plenty busy nowadays, between the development of this year’s release of Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate and next year’s forthcoming Lords of Shadow II, which was announced prior to E3.  But Dave Cox, producer for the team, doesn’t want the developer to become known for just the Castlevania franchise.

In an interview with VG24/7, Cox stated, “Like I said, I know there’s going to be pressure on us to do another Castlevania game, but I don’t want to rise to that pressure.  I want to do something else.  I love Contra.  I’d love to do Contra.  At MercurySteam we’ve got an original idea that I think is really awesome.  We’d love to bring that idea to market and I’m hoping that the success of Lords of Shadow 2 will allow us to do that.”

While it’d be sad to see them break off from a good thing, Cox may have something up his sleeve for Contra.  Just as long as it’s something that’s better than whatever it is we got back on the PS1.  Yech.

Meanwhile, we’ll have a preview of Mirror of Fate within the next few weeks, so be sure to check back!
