Mario Kart 8: How to Upload Replays to YouTube

You'll be a racing star before you know it.
This article is over 10 years old and may contain outdated information

Now that Mario Kart 8 is finally available for Wii U, millions of fans can race around a variety of tracks, either with local multiplayer or online through the Nintendo Network, in stunning high-definition.

In addition to the spiffy new presentation and revamped gameplay, there’s a great new social option where you can show off your racing antics with others. In an effort to make the game more shareable, Nintendo included an option where you can upload 30-second replays from your race for the world to see, either through its pre-customized system or through selections made following the race.

It sounds like a complicated process, but it couldn’t be easier. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown on how to upload your replays and become a racing video superstar on YouTube (as well as MiiVerse).

Finish your race and select the replay

Once you get through your racing event, don’t go to Next Race. Instead, select the replay option, which will take you into a quick recap of the track you just finished. You can either sit back and watch your racing antics, or select Edit or Share replay, depending what you want to do.

In a hurry? Upload!

When you select Share, you’ll go with the pre-programmed replay option that Nintendo put in place. This is a solid recreation of events that happened during the race, including key jumps off hills or instances when you managed to take out an opponent in a key moment during the race, using a turtle shell or other item.

You’ll have the option to view the entire replay before you upload, and we suggest doing this to make sure that all the angles are right. Once you’re ready, go into a YouTube upload page.

Log into your Google or YouTube account, or create one if you don’t already have it set up; it’s free. It only takes a few seconds to fill in the information, which will then be verified by the Nintendo Network. Once it’s in place, you’ll move on to the next screen.

There’s also an option to share your racing prowess on Mario Kart TV via the MiiVerse channel. This is completely optional, and if you’re not a fan, you can stick with YouTube uploads. However, it only takes a few seconds to set up, and it adds to the audience that you’re trying to attract. NOTE: you’ll need to make sure you’ve logged into the MiiVerse at least once, or else you won’t be able to post the video.

After that, make the selection to upload. This can take anywhere from two to five minutes, depending on your Internet speed. The basic time for our personal uploads was around three to four minutes, with the final results looking good, as you can see in the two videos posted below.

On that note, keep in mind that you can change the title of your video. Nintendo will staple on a basic title that mentions Mario Kart 8, Wii U and the track you just raced on. You can change it to whatever you want, but consider that younger eyes will watch these clips, so don’t use profane language.

That’ll do it for the basic uploads, but there’s one more option to consider.

Customizing Your Replay

You can select Edit in the replay menu and create your dream clip. There are a number of settings you can focus on, including usage of items, the time you spend drifting in a race (some people really like to show off on their boost drifts) and even specific characters.

The clips usually go for 30 seconds – trying to go longer will mean a bigger upload time, thus taking you away from the game – so you’ll want to make sure your highlights stand out. Key moments where you dethrone leading racers are always good to watch, and focusing on a key driver as he or she makes their way through more beautiful portions of the track tend to be eye-catching. These are just suggestions – you can edit your clips any way you see fit.

Once edited, you’ll have the option to review your replay. Once everything is up to speed, go ahead and hit the Share option. Go through the YouTube and MiiVerse menus, upload your clip and boom! You’re a star!

Remember, you need to make sure you have a steady Internet speed for uploading, as well as some form of Google/YouTube account so you can share your clips with others. Have fun, and show us your skills!

Mario Kart 8 is available now for Wii U at retail stores and digital download through Nintendo’s eShop.
