What is the Classified File in Character Creation in Starfield – Answered

On my way to becoming the Mysterious Stranger

Marika Boros Starfield

One of the first important choices you’ll make in Starfield is related to your background. There are dozens to choose from, Pilgrim to Diplomat. But there’s one that is more mysterious than others. And that’s the “FILE NOT FOUND” background. So, what is the “FILE NOT FOUND” in Starfield?

Starfield: What is the “File Not Found” Background?

There are twenty-one potential choices for your background in Starfield, and they run the gamut of potential careers and skills. Pick the chef, and you’ll already have a point in the Gastronomy skill chart, which will make food more effective when eaten. Pick Diplomat and you’ll have a higher chance of succeeding in a Persuasion check.

But what is “FILE NOT FOUND”, at the bottom of the list?

The File Not Found option gives you one point in the skills Wellness, Ballistics, and Piloting. These skills are the foundation of any playthrough, as you’ll be doing a lot of running, gunning, and flying. And the vague implication of the class is that you’re possibly a smuggler, soldier, operative, or someone else who’s had their data wiped from all servers.

Beyond points in these skills, your background offers you the chance to interject with some unique dialogue from time to time. These conversation choices are usually positive-neutral and occur very rarely. In my first playthrough as Diplomat, I had the option to use that background three or four times.

I’ve yet to see the option arise for File Not Found. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t more to the class baked into the game. Starfield is massive, and the potential for side quests and dialogue options is huge.

That being said, it’s a good background to pick if you want points in some good, foundational skills. But note, you’ll be able to freely put your skill points in these skills later.

  • Wellness – Increase your max health by 10%.
  • Ballistics – Ballistic weapons do 10% more damage.
  • Piloting – You can now utilize ship thrusters.
