Breath of the Wild 2 has an Official Name That Nintendo Isn’t Ready to Reveal Yet

The subtitle is being kept secret for now.

Speaking with IGN in an interview, Bill Trinen and Nate Bihldorff (who also confirmed development on Bayonetta 3 is going well) stated that Breath of the Wild 2 isn’t the full, official name of the game.

In fact, the official subtitle for the highly anticipated sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is being kept secret and will be revealed by Nintendo at a later date.

Breath of the Wild 2 has an Official Name That Nintendo Isn’t Ready to Reveal Yet

It’s not surprising to hear that Breath of the Wild 2 isn’t actually going to just be called “Breath of the Wild 2” when it’s released. Instead, Breath of the Wild 2 is more of a short placeholder name, with the official name and subtitle to be revealed by Nintendo at a later date.

“As for why we’re holding back on the name, you’ll just have to stay tuned because, obviously, Zelda names are kind of important. Those subtitles… they start to give little bits of hints about maybe what’s going to happen,” explained Nintendo Treehouse’s Bill Trinen in an interview with IGN

“[Breath of the Wild 2 is going to be shorthand and it’s natural for people to want to find a shorthand way to frame it,” Trinen continued. “We’re still calling it the sequel to Breath of the Wild.”

As of right now, it sounds like Breath of the Wild 2 is still being framed and promoted as a sequel to Breath of the Wild, but its official subtitle that reveals more about the game itself is being kept secret.

We could see something like Breath of the Wild 2: Ganon’s Coming For You (a little joke from us), but ultimately what we do see will be revealed later on. As for how much later, that’s hard to say.

We got a brief trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 during the Nintendo Direct and after this trailer, a 2022 release window was shown. It’d be interesting to see if the next trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 contains the full name and release date reveal together.

It’d be even more interesting if that news were to happen at E3 2022 as the E3 prior to the release of the first Breath of the Wild game featured an incredible Breath of the Wild booth setup for Nintendo.

We’d love to see something similar at an in-person E3 for Breath of the Wild 2.

Until Nintendo is ready to reveal more though, all we have to go on are the latest trailer for the game, the 2022 release window, and the info that Breath of the Wild 2 isn’t the full, official name.

While we’re waiting to hear what Nintendo plans on calling Breath of the Wild 2, we’re curious to hear what you think it should be called.
