Wolfenstein: The New Order Beginner’s Tips

Step into Blazkowicz's shoes and do some damage.

Today marks the long-awaited return of one of gaming’s greatest heroes, B.J. Blazkowicz. The battle-hardened warrior hit the ground running against a neo-futuristic Nazi regime in Bethesda’s Wolfenstein: The New Order, and there’s no shortage of action as you blast your way to victory.

If you’re new to first person shooters, we have tips for killing different enemies in the game, as well as the benefit of using stealth tactics.

Action vs. Stealth

What’s cool about Wolfenstein: The New Order is that you have two different ways to play. You can either rely on stealth and few gun battles, or you can take your chances with guards pulling alarms and go in guns blazing. The choice is yours.

By using stealth, you can either take out enemies with a silenced pistol or quietly sneak behind them with an effective knife attack. The better you are at stealth, the more opportunity you have in picking up perks, such as the ability to reload faster, or running quicker while carrying heavy weaponry.

On the flip side, twin assault rifles are nothing to laugh at, and once you pick up the automatic shotgun, you’ll plug holes in anyone that gets in your way.

Go for the Head

When it comes to taking on robots – which you’ll run into roughly an hour into The New Order – it helps to know their weak points. The body is mostly armored, so unless you have access to the laser cutter in its firing mode, chances are you’ll use regular firearms to take them on.

Luckily, you can take them down with ease by going for their heads. When you shoot them a few times in their metallic skulls, they’ll temporarily break down before exposing their red nerve points up top. Just keep blasting away at their noggins and eventually you’ll bring them down to size.

Now, with the giant robot, which shows up in the hangar midway through the game, the head isn’t necessarily its weakest point. With this, you’ll want to keep pounding away on its firearm, using turrets scattered in the helicopters overhead (they run out of ammo, so be ready to move quickly) and a charging station that will give your laser cutter more firepower. Try to stay close to the charger and time a few shots in the tank’s body. Eventually, it’ll be scrap metal.

Watch Your Health and Armor

This is an old-school Wolfenstein shooter, so you’ll occasionally run low on both health and ammunition. In this case, it helps to explore the levels, as you’ll often find weapon refills and health packs. If you’re under fire, find a spot to avoid death, then try to take down an enemy with your knife (which you’ll always have on hand). This should give you the fleeting opportunity to pick up their firearms.

It helps to find good cover spots, especially when going up against larger robots that will unload upon you. Keep moving and stay in a safe location until you’re sure you can get a bead on their heads, then come out and attack. You’ll live to fight another day – or another robot, whichever comes first.

Stuck? Look Around

Finally, there are some quiet moments in the game where Blazkowicz will hang around the hub or interrogate a Nazi captain to get information. In order to proceed, you may be required to find items located in the area.

For instance, with the interrogation scene, you’ll notice a chainsaw on the table. However, you won’t be able to access it until you put on protective gear. Simply head over to the closet and pick up the vest hanging on the door, and the goggles sitting in the box below. Once you have these items, you can pick up the chainsaw and the cut scene will move the stage forward.

It also doesn’t hurt to explore the area and find Nazi treasure. These can unlock bonus Achievements and Trophies if you locate enough of them.

Wolfenstein: The New Order is available now for Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PC.
