This guide will help you earn an S Rank in the story mission Proxy War Without End in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, and includes a list of the mandatory and optional objectives available for this mission. Keep in mind that it is not necessary to complete all the objectives to earn an S Rank. All you need is an accumulated score of 130,000 or more, and earning the time bonus as well as some score multipliers will greatly increase your chances of achieving an S Rank for the mission.
Objectives
- Eliminate the gunship (Mandatory).
- Eliminate two tanks (Mandatory).
- Eliminate two armored vehicles (Mandatory).
- Extract two tanks and two armored vehicles (Optional).
- Extract the armored column’s commander (Optional).
- Secure the rough diamond hidden by the armored column’s commander (Optional).
- Secure the blueprint carried by the gunship (Optional).
Walkthrough
Before you head into the mission, make sure you equip some C4 at the prep screen in order to destroy the mission objectives. You will be taking out several tanks, so plenty of C4 or even your rocket launcher should do the trick.
Begin this mission by deploying at the landing zone in the center of the mission area. Pull up your iDROID and note the two tanks approaching from the east, as you will be eliminating these tanks first.
Once you land, hop on D-Horse and begin riding east toward a dirt road just a few meters away from your location. This road leads to an outpost off to the left, which is where the tanks are headed. The goal here is to intercept the tanks on this road before they reach the outpost.
Plant several charges of C4 in the middle of the road, dividing the charges into two stacks. Space the stacks apart roughly the distance that two tanks would be. At this point, the two tanks should be getting close. After you finish planting the C4, quickly run for cover behind some rocks nearby and wait for the tanks to approach. As both tanks position themselves over your stacks of C4, blow the charges to destroy the pair of tanks.
From here, get back on D-Horse and ride toward the next target vehicle to the northeast near Ditadi Abandoned Village. This tank is also headed toward the same outpost that you were outside of a moment ago, only this time it is approaching from the other side.
Wait until the tank passes ahead of you, and ride toward the tank from behind. Tanks typically can’t see behind them, so you shouldn’t have to worry about being spotted. The tank will stop once it reaches a roadblock just beyond the outpost. Hop off of your D-Horse and quickly sneak up behind the tank while it is stopped. Use the Fulton Recovery Device to extract the vehicle out of the area.
From here, ride D-Horse to the final target vehicle indicated on your map. Wait for it to stop at the nearby outpost, and start to approach the area with caution. Several guards may be patrolling nearby, so just keep your tranquilizer pistol handy. Proceed to sneak up to the tank and tie a balloon to it to Fulton extract the vehicle out of the area.
With two of the mandatory objectives completed, now all you must do is eliminate the gunship. We will be using C4 to destroy the helicopter, so call in a supply drop if you need a resupply. You can also destroy the chopper from a distance with your rocket launcher if you wish, but this can hinder your stealth bonus and will take a bit more time.
Wait until the helicopter approaches the outpost and begins to hover close to the ground. Carefully sneak up behind the chopper, and plant several charges of C4 on the ground beneath it. You might as well plant all of your C4 to ensure that it will get the job done. Now sneak away to give yourself a bit of distance from the blast radius, and proceed to blow up the C4 to destroy the helicopter.
Once you have eliminated the helicopter, conclude the mission by running away until you clear the hot zone. A speedy completion time combined with multiple score bonuses should grant you more than enough points to earn an S Rank rating.
