NBA 2K25’s MyCareer mode always starts from the concrete. Either you make your way up from college to the NBA or skip straight to the NBA and pick a team. In this year’s MyCareer mode, you’ll have the option to choose both, and most players want to speedrun their careers by earning that starter role to earn more VC because of the higher playing time. Here’s how to become a starter in NBA 2K25’s MyCareer mode.

Once you create your player and curate your build, you’ll immediately start in the NBA with the team of your choice. You’ll have the option to play the Heart of the Dynasty mode if you want to experience the journey leading up to the NBA, but if not, your goal is to make a name for yourself in the NBA.

You’ll start as a high-potential rookie, but you still need to earn your keep. Depending on your position, you’ll have to earn your starting spot against the current starter on your chosen team.

If you made a point guard build and chose the Dallas Mavericks, you’ll have to earn your spot against Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving. You’ll have a main objective under the quests tab called “Franchise Player: Become a Starter.”

You only have to get a teammate grade higher than the player you are competing against in four different games.

It doesn’t matter if you are doing below average or finishing with a B- or B teammate grade at the end of the game. In my experience, I finished once with a B- on Allstar and a 5-minute per quarter setting and was still better than Mike Conley, so it progressed my objective.

The better your competition for the position, the harder it is to get the starter spot.

You should choose the best team fitting your player in MyCareer instead of joining a strong team randomly.

Can You Lose Your Starter Position in NBA 2K25?

Once you get the starting position, it isn’t permanent. You still have to earn your promotion by finishing two of the following objectives:

  • 3x Teammate Grade B or Higher
  • 3x 20-PT Games
  • 3x 10-AST Games
  • 3x 10-REB Games
  • 3x Stocks (Blocks and Steals) Games

There isn’t a deadline for these objectives on the quest page, so as long as you focus on two of them, you’ll get the next Franchise Player quest and keep the starter role.
