Remove or destroy?

Caged Hearts are some of the most powerful items in Diablo 4 Season 1 and they work a lot like gems do by default. They can be slotted in specific armor for additional effects. However, not everything is the same, and I’ll go over whether you can remove the hearts or not in this Season of the Malignant guide.

Diablo 4 – Can You Remove Caged Hearts?

The short answer is no, you can’t remove Caged Hearts from your equipment once you have already slotted them. As soon as you place the heart in an item that correlates to the same color, that heart can no longer be used for anything else. It either stays in the item or you destroy the heart in favor of something else.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can’t change the Caged Hearts that are in your equipment. You can still swap the hearts by placing a new one in the same item. If the colors correlate like before, then there will be no issues. The only problem is your previous heart will be destroyed, so make sure it’s not one that you care about.

There are 32 Malignant Hearts in Season 1 of Diablo 4, and even fewer when you split them up into classes. Why am I telling you this? Because that makes the loot pool for Caged Heart effects fairly small. The odds of you finding the same effect are incredibly high. The only difference is some of them can have much better stats.

So, if you find a standard effect and want to use it on your low-level gear, then go for it. You will eventually find a Caged Heart with the same effect by farming or by crafting one yourself at the latest workbench in Diablo 4.
