What is Wordle and Who Made it?
Wordle is a free online word puzzle game that is hosted on the website of the New York Times. You can play without an account, but if you want to keep track of your progress (and of course, show your streak off) you can always register a free account. The rules of Wordle are fairly simple:
You are given six tries to guess what’s the mystery word of the day. When you type in a 5-letter word, the game will color the letters in it with different colors, based on how good your guess is:
- Gray – The letter does not exist in the word at all
- Yellow / Mustard – The letter exists in the word in at least one copy, but is in another position
- Green – The letter exists in the word, and you’ve guessed the correct position (more of them can exist)
Wordle was made in 2022 by Josh Wardle, a software engineer. The inspiration to make Wordle was very mundane: his partner loves to play word puzzles. Wordle was originally made so the two of them can play around with it, but at some point, it was published, and the rest is history. The name “Wordle” is a clever play on words related to Josh’s last name. Josh Wardle is also famous for creating r/place on Reddit which is hosted by Reddit periodically, in which people collaborate to draw things on a big board, pixel by pixel.
