WE RECOMMEND AN 80 SPEED RATING FOR YOUR QB. YOU CAN GET BY WITH 75 SPEED BUT SHOULD GO NO LOWER THAN 70.
We have run the option in Madden NFL 25 for hours and have determined that to run the option at its full potential your QB should have an 80 Speed rating. This is the threshold that allows your QB to break long runs down the sideline and create enough separation from defenders that you can expect to pick up big gains on the ground. This doesn’t mean you can’t run the option with slower QBs. It does mean that you should expect to gain minimal yards.
4 BETTER BLOCKING WRS AND TES
THE IMPACT BLOCK RATING (IBL) IS WHAT DETERMINES THE BIG BLOCKS DOWNFIELD.
If you are pushing all in on running an option offense you need to sub in blocking WRs and TEs. This means that you will be sitting your better receiving options in favor of gaining an advantage in the run game. This isn’t always the sexy move, because it will be hard to sit your star players, but it’s a move that will benefit your option offense in the long run. We tend to focus more on the IBL rating than any other as it’s the best indicator of whether or not we will see our blocker pancake the defender. Don’t worry—number three on our list will satisfy your passing needs in this offense.
3 VERTICAL THREAT WR
LOOK FOR SPEED AND HEIGHT WHEN TARGETING A VERTICAL THREAT WR.
While we recommend that you sub in WRs and TEs with better blocking skills, we also believe that one of your wide receivers should be a vertical threat to opposing defenses. We always want your opponents to worry about the deep ball so that they can’t load up the box to try and stop the option. Speed WRs should have at least a 95 Speed rating, and when looking for height you should target 6’2” and taller. Any combination of the two should work for your offense. This means that a 97 Speed 5’8” WR will be effective and that an 88 Speed 6’4” WR will be effective. Make sure that you have an option you can target downfield on every play.
2 SPEED AND POWER IN THE BACKFIELD
WANT TO TURN UP THE HEAT ON YOUR OPPONENT? USE TWO SPEEDY HBS IN YOUR BACKFIELD.
If you are running a read option-style offense then you want to use a speedy HB. A fast HB should have a 92 Speed rating, and a power HB should have a 90-plus Truck rating. This puts your HBs in the best position possible. When the DE crashes down on your HB, keep the ball with your QB. If the DE stands up to protect against the QB scramble be sure to give the ball to your power HB, so that he can fight through the line of scrimmage for tough yards.
1 PATIENCE
NEVER FORCE THE OPTION. TAKE WHAT THE DEFENSE GIVES YOU.
The most important rule to understand when running the option is to always take what the defense gives you. If you do otherwise you will not be successful when running this offense. This might be frustrating if you are looking to scramble with your QB, but your opponent always takes that option away. You need to have the patience to be repetitive with your decisions so that you can have long-term success. When running the option it’s often the first person to lose patience who is defeated. If the key DE stands up, always give the ball to your HB. If the key DE attacks the QB, then always keep the ball with the QB and look to pitch it to your HB. The option is simple and can be very effective as long as you have patience.
