Hinterland Studio Inc., headquartered on Vancouver Island in Canada, describes the beginning of The Long Dark as a thoughtful, first-person survival simulation that emphasizes quiet exploration in a stark, yet hauntingly beautiful, post-disaster setting. The Creative Director, Raphael van Lierop is a good friend of Prima Games. Aside from helping us tremendously on the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine and Halo 4 strategy guides, he's a respected veteran of the gaming industry working on titles such as Dawn of War series, Company of Heroes, and Far Cry 3.

I know him personally as someone with tremendous passion and a captivating storyteller.

I first met Raphael (aka ‘Duke of Awesome’ as named by Kevin Pereira on G4TV) on a work trip to Vancouver to discuss the process of making strategy guide content for Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine. He was slightly less bearded then, but passionate and excited to show us their game. We sat down in a conference room with a long wooden table, ergo chairs, a huge drop down screen, and an even more impressive sound system. We watched some gameplay (I could feel it in my chest) with Raphael pointing out key elements and points in the gameplay. It ended, I was breathless, and Raphael starting telling stories. These weren’t ramblings, but more a passionate retelling of why Space Marines were so badass. I felt as if I was sitting around a campfire, on the edge of a fallen tree, waiting for the next twist or turn. I was audibly amazed making such noises as, “Whoa…whaaa?...sheez…awesome”. We were there for some time, but I wanted to hear more, learn more, experience more!

We’re drawn in by stories, we need to feel, we want to be entertained.

I do know that the Hinterland team lead by Raphael is very strong and the story they will tell is destined to be epic. My inner child wants this to be a modern day Oregon Trail…in the snow…with Red Dead Redemption bits…the openness of Fallout 3, and the survival scenarios of The Walking Dead. Is that asking too much?

Raphael- I’m bringing some friends and I’m sure we’ll find you from the smoke stack through the trees, the crackling noise of heat splintered wood, and the shadowy epic bearded figure welcoming us to sit on a fallen tree and warm our hands. We want to hear what you have to tell…tell us a story.
