“Its undoubtedly my favorite CoD campaign, but a familiar structure holds it back. Call of Duty campaigns don’t have to be sprawling, cinematic military tourism. They could focus on fewer ideas and really nail them. I want the 8-hour, fully fleshed-out version of Going Dark more than fleeting vignettes.
Daydreaming aside, I love Modern Warfare for the big swings it does take. It sets the bar high for first-person gun feel. Gunfight is a standout mode that proves to me Call of Duty can slow down and the sky won’t fall. I hope to see even bigger risks with its post-launch support. Modern Warfare is a promising platform for new ideas, but the sentiment will carry little weight if Activision shoves this game aside and we’re talking about Black Ops 5 in 2020. For now, it’s the Call of Duty to beat.”

“Infinity Ward was always going to have to simplify the complexities of modern warfare to make this game work. What’s important is what it chose to emphasise in service of that. For the most part, the studio has decided to pull focus onto the chaos born out of proxy wars and the debilitating pressure of being under fire from a seemingly unstoppable force, and it works when it does so. When it works to emphasise some perceived darker reflection of the world, it comes across as callous and a little cynical. That isn’t enough to detract from what this Modern Warfare revival is ultimately able to achieve, but there’s still work for Infinity Ward to do as it works to re-establish this series for a new generation.”

“All told, Modern Warfare should have received a new Call of Duty subhead given just how different its avenues of play are. Not every one of Infinity Ward’s ideas works, but a few are successful enough that I could see them as series staples. Modern Warfare’s accomplishments may not be as pronounced as Black Ops 4’s (Blackout being one of them), but it still delivers a hell of a multiplayer experience. Gunfight alone is worth the price of admission.”

“But rather than go off into the night, Call of Duty has pulled off the impossible and rebooted the biggest individual brand, with a package that Modern Warfare fans will have to get their teeth stuck into because of the sheer nostalgic respect lavished on the original game, while new players will quickly be drawn in by the technothriller action and the stellar production values.
“The campaign has something to say, even if it isn’t necessarily presented in the most respectful way and the multiplayer will provide you with something to do as soon as that is over. I want to see more of this world, I just really really wish they hadn’t turned waterboarding into a minigame.”
