Fallout 76 Is Getting a New Fear System With Epic Wendigo Boss Fight

Fallout 76 is an entirely new game now that we have a new story and NPCs, but it looks like Bethesda is looking to up that fear factor. During a recent QuakeCon virtual showcase (thanks, COVID-19), the team behind the online post-apocalyptic adventure showed off what’s next.

Firstly, the team showed off a terrifying new Wendigo boss that is on the way. After my time with Until Dawn, I am both excited and terrified to face off against one of those again, but it looks like the boss fight, called A Colossal Problem, is only just the start of making this game scary.

This encounter will allow for up to 8 players to team up and wreck house against a foe that equates to 30,000 hit points. But that’s not all to this spoopy addition; Bethesda also revealed that players will not have to only fight against the Wendigo, but each other as well.  Or, at least, each other’s fears. This new inclusion will add a new fear system into the online game that will confuse pretty much everything.

How the new fear mechanic will work is that the Wendigo will let out a special shout that works as any “fear” spell in RPGs like Dragon Age. The shout happens, players are forced to run away for 2-3 seconds completely defenseless. Even better? That fear push? It’s completely uncontrollable, which means you can darn well yeet yourself off of a cliff and be none-the-wiser until it was too late.

For those playing on PC and have the Public Test Server, this new foe can be found as an active opponent over in PTR right now. No date on when this big boi comes over to the base game out of testing, but if all goes well, it could be arriving as early as this week.
