Dragon Quest is coming to Xbox. Kicking off the July 23 Xbox Showcase was Square Enix with a pretty big announcement. During the Summer Game Fest pre-show hosted by Geoff Keighley, Dragon Quest creator and lead Yuji Horii revealed that Japan’s most historic JRPG series is making its debut on Xbox. Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition will come to the Xbox One on December 4, 2020. It will also be available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

Dragon Quest XI originally launched for the PlayStation 4 in 2017, but later came to the Nintendo Switch as Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. This version of the game added a lot of new content, making it a much more substantial version of the game. We’ll go ahead and list those features in case you’re curious:
- In Japan, Dragon Quest games generally launch with midi-based music and no voice acting. The first English release had VO, but the new version comes with orchestrated music and a new Japanese VO option.
- Additional story content in the form of character-specific side stories are included at a certain point of the story, fleshing out what happens to Sylvando, Erik, Jade, and Rab when the party is briefly separated.
- A 2D mode that makes the entire game playable in classic, top-down JRPG style. A series of side-quests in that same 2D style are also included, which send you to worlds of previous Dragon Quest games.
- Photo mode! Dragon Quest XI is going to look amazing on Xbox One X, and that photo mode is going to do extra work, without a doubt.
- Various quality of life changes are present as well, including a portable crafting system, more cosmetic options, menu shortcuts, and more.
Previously only for the Nintendo Switch, the Definitive Edition extras are now spreading out to other platforms, as Square Enix also confirmed a PS4 and Steam release in addition to the Xbox One version.
