With this lucrative deal in place, and the knowledge that at least five projects connected to the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series are in development for HBO, it sounds like Martin is going to be kept very, very busy.

This is both good news for A Song of Ice and Fire fans who want a fresh start with a new HBO series after the final season of Game of Thrones, and potentially bad news in that many are still waiting for Martin to finish the sixth A Song of Ice and Fire book, The Winds of Winter

HBO and George R. R. Martin Sign Five-Year Deal

Expect to see a lot more content related to Game of Thrones on HBO as George R. R. Martin has signed a five-year contract with the network valued in the mid-eight figure range.

As summed up by The Hollywood Reporter, there are at least five different projects related to Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series being developed for HBO. These projects include House of the Dragon, a prequel that follows the story of House Targaryen and is set 300 years before Game of Thrones.

Martin will serve as executive producer on the series, with production expected to begin sometime this April and the first season (10 episodes) set to air in 2022. Then, we’ll see even more Targaryen-related content with The Sea Snake which follows the head of House Velaryon, Lord Corlys Velaryon (The Sea Snake, Lord of the Tides, husband to Rhaenys Targaryen).

A series called Dunk and Egg based on hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg (Aegon Targaryen) is also planned and will be set 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Meanwhile, a project based around House Martell ancestor Nymeria will take viewers all the way back to events set 1,000 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

And for something a little closer to the Game of Thrones timeline but with an entirely different focus, there’s a series planned that’ll focus on activities within the King’s Landing slum, Flea Bottom. Finally, an animated series is reportedly being planned, but details regarding what the series will be about have yet to be provided.

Outside of content related to A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin is also working as an executive producer on two other series for HBO, one called Who Fears Death based on the novel by author Nnedi Okorafor, and one called Roadmarks based on the novel by Roger Zelazny.

And in the realm of gaming, George R. R. Martin is collaborating with Hidetaka Miyazaki on the next FromSoftware game Elden Ring which was first announced back in 2019 and has yet to be given an official release date as of the time of this writing.

All in all, it sounds like George R. R. Martin will have his hands full over the next few years, especially considering that Martin is also working to finish the sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The Winds of Winter.
