Resident Evil 7 – How to Save

Find out how to save your game using Resident Evil 7’s save system.

Resident Evil 7 is a return to form for many mechanics in the game, and that includes the new save system that has been implemented in the latest installment of the series. While there is still an auto-save function, much of the game’s saving must be done manually, if you wish to be able to go back and explore older save files. In this article we’ll teach you everything you need to know about how to save your game in Resident Evil 7.

Saving at Checkpoints

Like any game these days, Resident Evil 7 offers an auto-save function. Since the game is built around many of the older systems that made the original games so enjoyable and challenging, these auto-save points are scattered through the game, happening only at pre-determined points throughout the story. There is also only one auto-save slot, which means you’ll have no control over whether or not you want to write over a save file or create a new save entirely.

Auto-save checkpoints happen regularly throughout the game, before and after boss fights, when entering a save room and after finding essential items for progression. These auto-save points are marked by a circular symbol in the top right corner of the screen. It should also be noted that, the higher the difficulty, the less auto-save points you will find throughout the game.

How to Save in Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 7 also uses a manual save system similar to the one that was originally seen in the first three Resident Evil games. Instead of using ink ribbons, though, the game uses cassette tapes. These special tapes can be found around the Baker home and used in Cassette Recorders to save your progress. These recorders are often found inside of “save rooms” which usually include an item chest, where you can stow items you don’t need at the moment. The nice thing about “save rooms” is that nothing can harm you within them, so they are a perfect place to take a break and catch your breath between encounters.

In the Easy and Normal modes of the game, you will have an unlimited amount of saves allowed at a Cassette Recorder. You won’t need to find tapes in either of these modes, either. Which will make it much easier to save on Easy and Normal modes. On Madhouse difficulty, players will need to find tapes for each individual manual save that they want to make. Tapes are also harder to find, with less of them scattered throughout the house when playing Madhouse difficulty mode.

Saving is an important part of the Resident Evil 7 experience, and players will need to be diligent when saving their games throughout the Baker residence. In the lower difficulty modes, things will be easier to return from, with most players never losing more than five minutes of gameplay at a time. As you move higher in the difficulty, though, things will become much more challenging, and you’ll have to be wary of when you save and use your tapes.
