Obsidian’s isometric RPG project smashes Kickstarter record

Obsidian Entertainment has managed to raise more than $4 million to fund the development of its upcoming isometric RPG Project Eternity.

The money was raised largely via a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign which came to an end yesterday. The Kickstarter’s final figure rested at $3,986,929 while at least $140,000 came from PayPal contributions, thankfully bringing the final figure just above its final $4 million stretch goal (which gives Project Eternity a second large city).

Obsidian Entertainment was formed by ex-members of Black Isle Studios, a dev team with a habit of making fantastic RPG sequels to other company’s IPs (Knights of the Old Republic 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Dungeon Siege 3). The team was also responsible for creating its own IP in Alpha Protocol, an underperformer in terms of sales but certainly a cult hit and a pretty fantastic game in our eyes.

The game will feature 2D pre-rendered backgrounds with characters and select elements being rendered in 3D. It’s being built using the increasingly popular and agile Unity engine, is set to rely on text-based storytelling and promises deep and rich lore. While there’ll be a few basic guns in the title it’s largely magic, religion, brute force and soul control that provides the combat’s clout. If you’re after learning a little more about Project Eternity then head on over to the Kickstarter page.
