Mortal Kombat 11 Director Reveals Previous Talks With Marvel For a Fighting Game

Injustice went the DC route, but the Mortal Kombat 11 Director reveals there was almost a Marvel game.

Earlier today, Mortal Kombat 11 director Ed Boon revealed that The Matrix protagonist Neo almost made it into Injustice 2, but the revelations didn’t just stosp there. In a recent rapid-fire interview, Boon revealed that he had previously been in talks with Marvel for a fighting game – though the discussions never saw fruition.

Director Ed Boon recently sat down with the folks over at Game Informer and it was there that he opened up a little bit about Marvel. And by a little, we mean very little. When asked about the nature of the Marvel talks, Boon responded “I probably shouldn’t talk about it” before he eventually added, “We would love to make a Marvel fighting game, or Marvel vs. DC I think would be the coolest.”

Since both Mortal Kombat and Injustice both saw a hodgepodge of guest fighters, seeing the studio outside of the DC / MK scope is pretty easy to do. Still, NetherRealm is under the Warner Bros. umbrella, which means DC rights are easy to come by – Marvel, not so much.

Another important thing to note is that Boon never mentioned when exactly this conversation went down. It could have been last year, it could have been a decade ago, but it’s pretty safe to assume that we won’t be seeing a Marvel NetherRealm game anytime soon, no matter how much we would love to see one.

While we don’t have a Marvel vs. DC game to look forward to anytime soon, we do at least have Mortal Kombat coming down the pipeline! Mortal Kombat 11 is poised to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on April 23rd.
