Insomniac Games is sharing a few more details about the upcoming standalone game, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The continuation of the first game that released on the PlayStation 4, Miles Morales is set one year after the events of its predecessor. Though tied in, the studio mentioned that this is very much a standalone game, even likening it to that of Uncharted: Lost Legacy.

Insomniac Creative Director Brian Horton took to the PlayStation Blog to share a few more details about the recently revealed PS5 game, including more on ray-tracing, how the game interacts with the new Dualsense PS5 controller, improved skin shading, and more.

Miles Morales is probably one of my favorite characters in the Marvel-verse of all time when he was first introduced back in 2011. His origins story was enthralling and his potential to grow beyond just the comics was immense. When the film Into the Spider-Verse came out with Miles front and center, the entertainment industry went wild and it went on to win countless awards. Now Miles is back again, and Insomniac promises to do this character justice.

According to Horton, “As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.”

With this game being set one year after the original storyline, players will be thrust into a snowy New York City. As the Christmas spirit rises, so does criminal activity, which will put Miles in the path of brand-new enemies with new skins beyond what we saw with Peter Parker.

The creative director also cleared up the confusion once and for all. When the trailer was first revealed, there was confusion over if it was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or an expansion. One exec said expansion, which turned out to not also be technically true. Instead, this is meant to expand on the game (like an expansion), but also built to be its own experience like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Insomniac promises this is an “important, heartfelt, emotional, and essential experience” for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe and one that is made even better through the power of next-gen tech.

We are also excited for the game to demonstrate the power of PlayStation 5 this holiday. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.

Horton also told fans, in the blog post, not to worry about Peter Parker, “we still have much of Peter’s story left to tell.” So there’s that, more Marvel for all!

We don’t have a release date at this time, but Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is slated for a PlayStation 5 launch. Are you excited? Tell us all about it over on Twitter @PrimaGames, we’d love to hear your thoughts on the latest tid-bits regarding the next tale for Insomniac.
