With so many critically acclaimed games that came out in 2018, we sympathize with those who have to compile their own game awards. It’s difficult to choose which game was truly the best with such a diverse array of quality games. Luckily for us, we don’t have such a burden. In this article, we will give a brief summary of all those games released on the Playstation 4 that we think are well worth your time. Given the holidays are nigh, if you haven’t played these gems yet, it’s about time you did.
God of War
There is a reason this game has won so many Game of the Year awards. It is truly a masterpiece. Exclusive to the Playstation 4, God of War continues the story of Kratos. A light reboot of the famed franchise of the same name, it takes place after Kratos’s ventures slaying the Greek pantheon. However, this time around, he isn’t a lone god-killer. With his son, Atreus, they embark on a journey through a world littered with Norse gods, creatures, friend and foe alike. God of War offers a perfect blend of storytelling that touches on themes of love, loss, family, and redemption, with the fast-paced action the franchise is known for. Do yourself a favor and embark with Kratos and Atreus on a journey like none other in gaming this year.
Red Dead Redemption 2
If you haven’t heard of Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ve probably been living under a rock. If so, it’s no big deal, because we’re here to tell you about it. In Red Dead Redemption 2 you primarily play as Van Der Linde gang member, Arthur Morgan. Given the game takes place in an open world setting, and there are countless things to do, every day you play this game will be like Christmas. You’ll be playing it for days and days. So, if you’ve ever wanted to wander as a cowboy in the wild West, Red Dead Redemption 2 may just be the game for you.
Spider-Man
Ever wanted to be like Spider-Man? Sony’s exclusive, Spider-Man, may be the best path to doing just that. In the game you play as the Spider-Man and you are let loose on New York City in an open world laced with web-slinging fun. Swinging from building to building, dispatching criminals, hanging them up to dry, all makes for one exhilarating, adrenaline fueled good time. You’ll meet a host of familiar villains and be given a diverse range of abilities to take them down with. If you want to fulfill that childhood dream of being a superhero, PlayStation 4’s Spider-Man should to the trick.
Monster Hunter: World
Released in January of 2018, Monster Hunter: World has had plenty of time to release a slew of DLC content. So, as of right now, this game is huge! Like Red Dead Redemption 2, if you are looking for a game to sink your teeth into, this is a potential candidate. The title of the game tells it all. You get to customize your character, choosing from a range of classes with an assortment of weapons, and you wander a large world and hunt (yes, you guessed it) monsters. But this is no simple walk in the park slaying your typical monster. These monsters are huge! Because of this, you’ll spend up to 15-20 minutes (or more!) tracking and fighting these colossal beasts, utilizing strategies and techniques you’ve picked up along the way. If you’re truly in the mood for a good hunt, the Monster Hunter: World should satiate that craving.
Dragon Ball FighterZ
If you’re a Dragon Ball fan, then you’re probably familiar with all the previous Dragon Ball Z Budokai games. Regardless of your opinion about them, Dragon Ball FighterZ was, to many fans, a welcomed corrective. With a cartoon style, Dragon Ball FighterZ really makes you feel like you are watching an episode of Dragon Ball Z. With a large roster that includes all of your favorite DBZ characters, this game pays homage to the beloved show by featuring unique special moves and familiar fan-favorite locations like planet Namek. There is nothing like being down to the wire in an intense fight and then pulling off the perfect Kamehameha to send your opponent flying into space.
Celeste
Speaking of gems, Celeste is one of those hidden ones. Celeste is a 2D platformer where you play as Madeline. Your goal is to reach the top of a mountain, avoiding traps, overcoming obstacles, and performing air-defying feats. The game unfolds in a brisk fashion, equipping you with more and more mechanics, all of which you will have to master in order to finish through these challenging levels. Behind it all though, is a deep, rich story about self-discovery, depression, and anger. It’s not something you see everyday, especially when it comes to platformers. There is a reason Celeste was a contender for Game of the Year by so many platforms. That’s saying something when a 2D game is up against the big boys like God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2.
