Fortnite Announces Summer Skirmish Competitive Series

Over $8 million will be awarded in prize money in the upcoming Fortnite Summer Skirmish series.

Today, Epic Games announced their plans to host the Fortnite Summer Skirmish Series, an eight-week long series of competitions where the top Forntite competitors can compete for loads of prize money. To be specific, Epic is awarding over $8,000,000 in prize money (yes, that’s six zeroes) across the series of competitive events.

The Fortnite Summer Skirmish kicks off its first competitive event this weekend with a $250,000 Duos battle. Participants in the Duos competition this weekend will consist of “community creators and Fortnite players who have demonstrated their competitive prowess,” according to today’s announcement

Since Epic sort of sprung the news of the Summer Skirmish on everyone, there wasn’t really a way to sign up or try to qualify for this first event. However, Epic said that they will provide details on how to qualify for these competitive events in the future, so stay tuned for more details on how to participate in upcoming competitive events.

This is the first series of pro-level Fortnite competitions hosted by Epic since the Celebrity Pro AM that took place during E3 2018. Epic had expressed interest in competitive esports not too long ago, mentioning that they planned to put together a series of tournaments with a cumulative prize pool of over $100 million.

Following E3, Epic announced their 2019 Fortnite World Cup, a series of community-run events, online events, and major tournaments that would be held all over the world. Although the Summer Skirmish wasn’t explicitly described as being part of the Fortnite World Cup, it appears that the Summer Skirmish is at least part of that hefty esports prize pool.

The news comes less than 24 hours from the launch of Season 5 in Fortnite, which is expected to introduce a ton of map changes to Fortnite. Check back here for details on the new Season 5 changes, challenges, and information once Season 5 kicks off on July 12.
