Fortnite and Avengers: Infinity War Mashup Lets Players Become Thanos

Epic is bringing Thanos to Fortnite in a limited-time crossover event.

Today, Epic Games announced that they’ve teamed up with Marvel for an exciting crossover event between Fortnite Battle Royale and Avengers: Infinity War. According to exclusive details from Entertainment Weekly, Thanos, the villain of Avengers: Infinity War, will be making his debut in Fortnite Battle Royale starting on Tuesday, May 8.

The temporary crossover event, also known as the “Infinity Gauntlet Limited Time Mashup,” will consist of regular 100-player matches of Fortnite Battle Royale with an Avengers twist. In this limited-time mode, players can find the coveted Infinity Gauntlet containing all six Infinity Stones somewhere in the map. The player that discovers and equips the Infinity Gauntlet will transform into Thanos and wield the power of the stones.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Avengers: Infinity War’s co-directors Joe and Anthony Russo are huge Fortnite fans, which was the first step toward bringing Thanos to Fortnite. “Over the past few months, while we were editing Infinity War, we’d take breaks to hop on and get in a few games,” said Joe Russo to EW. “And then we started thinking, how cool would it be to have some kind of Avengers–Fortnite mashup? So we stalked Donald.”

Russo is referring to Donald Mustard, the worldwide creative director of Epic Games, who also went on to talk about how the Fortnite and Marvel crossover event came to fruition in the exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“Out of the blue, I get this call from Joe. And after a bit of geeking out over each other’s work, we start brainstorming these crazy ideas,” said Mustard. “It was really important that whatever we did, it had to be super authentic to both Fortnite and the Avengers: Infinity War, and something that fans of both would be excited about. About an hour later, we had the bones of this awesome idea for a limited time gameplay mode, and almost immediately our team got started.”

The limited-time Infinity Gauntlet crossover event will go live in Fortnite Battle Royale on Tuesday, May 8 for all platforms, which includes the mobile version of Fortnite on iOS. Downtime for the Fortnite v4.1 update will begin at 4:00 am ET.
