Drakengard Team Unites For Third Game, Coming To Japan This Year

Now, if we can just get a U.S. release…

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything from the Drakengard (aka Drag-on Dragoon) franchise.  However, with Square Enix apparently bringing back series in time for the forthcoming next generation of games (including rumored installments of a new Legacy of Kain and Just Cause 3), why not get the band back together?

This week’s issue of Famitsu is reporting that a sequel to the offbeat PS2 Drakengard series is in the works, and Square has even gone as far as recruiting the old team that helped put the games together in the first place to make sure everything goes right with it.  This includes many members of the Cavia Drakengard team, like director Taro Yoko (who also worked on Nier), producer Takamasa Shiba and character designer Kimihiko Fujisaka.  (They’re working under the label Access Games.)

The game is likely to be as action-packed as the original Drakengard games – maybe even more so – and features two new characters, Zero and One, who can create magic through the power of song.  Expect plenty of great ground combat, and, of course, dragons.

Drakengard 3 is set to arrive on PlayStation 3 in Japan later this year.  No word on a US release, but don’t be surprised if one surfaces.
