Conan Chop Chop Is No Joke, But It Sure Is Fun

If Castle Crashers had a baby with Conan The Barbarian... it still wouldn't be nearly as charming as Conan Chop Chop is.

If Castle Crashers had a baby with Conan The Barbarian… it still wouldn’t be nearly as charming as Conan Chop Chop is. This 4-person co-op brawler almost didn’t get made into a full game, but the folks at Funcom told the game’s developers, Mighty Kingdom, that they would publish their concept… if they made it with Conan characters.

Mighty Kingdom didn’t need much convincing, clearly, because Conan Chop Chop is slicing and dicing its way onto all major platforms, including PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch on September 3, 2019.

Conan Chop Chop isn’t a linear narrative brawler like Castle Crashers, mind you. The map is procedurally generated and requires players to wander around until they find a dungeon to conquer. There are shops littered throughout the various regions (there are a handful to discover and wander around, chopping up goblins, werewolves, and drow elves), so the best ways to get what you need is to defeat mobs, find treasure chests, and stay alive.

If you die in Conan Chop Chop, your friends can revive you… but you lose a chunk of your change in the process. (And no one but you will mourn the loss of your hard-fought cash.) Weapons and charms that are available for purchase in the villages are procedurally generated, so whoever gets to the best sword (or best charm) first, the others will have to wait for it to re-pop at a later time (or in a different locale).

Charms stack, which means that you can deal elemental damage to enemies that could be a potent combination of poison, fire, and frost. The charms aren’t attached to a particular weapon, which means that when you finally get the bastard sword you’ve been eyeballing since that first magical trip to the village… you won’t lose any of the charms you’ve purchased along the way.

Healing is crucial to ensuring the longevity of your squad of Conan gods. You can go to the village and be healed at the fountain. You can collect hearts from killing monsters. Or you can eat some meat. (Because there can’t be a Conan game without there being a wide array of meats.)

Conan Chop Chop is an irreverent brawler for those of us who have been itching for a new Castle Crashers experience since the end of the Xbox 360 era. Mighty Kingdoms hasn’t disappointed with their answer to the popular brawler and there will be plenty of laughs (and meats) to come this September.
