Wave 5 amiibo – Possible Retailer Exclusives – Duck Hunt, Falco, Mewtwo

Nintendo revealed only two amiibo for Wave 5, but we expect more than Palutena and Dark Pit come July.

Nintendo’s Wave 4 amiibo don’t come out until May 29, and we’re already looking ahead to Wave 5, which debuts sometime this July. At the moment, the company revealed two amiibo, Palutena and Dark Pit, both of which appear in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, as well as Kid Icarus Uprising, also available for 3DS.

Initially, this announcement seemed odd compared to Nintendo’s prior strategy of releasing several amiibo for each wave. Yes, there are only so many Smash amiibo to make (we still think Nintendo should release amiibo for all seven Koopalings), but come on, two? Considering there are eight Wave 4 amiibo and five Wave 6 amiibo, something doesn’t jive.

Of course, the Nintendo faithful assumed Ness would be available through multiple retailers until the company threw them a virtual curveball by making him GameStop exclusive, resulting in a website meltdown that left thousands of people empty handed, us included; we originally pre-ordered him through f.y.e., and have since collected our refunds. That said, although Nintendo doesn’t share amiibo secrets with Prima, it’s safe to say there will be additional Wave 5 amiibo, but if we had to guess, they’ll be retailer exclusive.

With amiibo for Splatoon and Yoshi’s Woolly World set to arrive in 2015, it makes sense for Nintendo to wrap up the Smash figures sooner than later; for all we know, there could be Mario Maker amiibo as well. With video game trade show E3 2015 taking place this June and at least two Nintendo Direct specials between now and July, this gives Nintendo the opportunity to fill out Wave 5 a bit with characters we desperately want.

We already know that Wave 6 consists of Dr. Mario (likely common), Zero Suit Samus (possibly the rarest of the rare), Bowser Jr., Ganondorf and Olimar.  But what about R.O.B., Duck Hunt, Mr. Game & Watch and Falco?Equally important are Lucas and Mewtwo, the two DLC characters. That’s a grand total of six outstanding fighters that’ll eventually receive their own amiibo at some point.

It’s impossible to guess which big box store will receive these amiibo, but expect the usual suspects (Toys R Us, Best Buy, Target and Walmart) to become big time players for Wave 5, and there’s still the possibility of Amazon jumping on board.

Of course, most collectors want the opportunity to purchase the amiibo they want without having to go through eBay. We did that for Marth and Meta Knight at great expense.

While on the subject of Marth, when will we see more of him? Nintendo originally said April, and there are quite a few Code Name S.T.E.A.M. players who would love to play as this character. Same deal with Ike!

Granted, Wave 5 may only consist of Palutena and Dark Pit, but this will probably not be the case. With that in mind, we look forward to learning more about amiibo in the months ahead.

Note: Everything in this article is pure speculation. Please do not yell at us if Nintendo does not announce more Wave 5 amiibo.
