Thoughts on the Animal Crossing Direct and Nintendo Switch Online news?

No big opinions on Animal Crossing because that isn’t really my scene. However that did look like a substantial content drop. Regarding NSO, More than doubling the price for what’s on offer is super suspect to me. Especially if you aren’t an Animal Crossing fan, that’s a bad deal currently. Hopefully Nintendo pumps more into the service to make it feel more worthwhile. They’ve pretty much hit the price ceiling here, so any additional console games can’t justify the price going up a third time.

How do you feel about Final Fantasy XIV being the most profitable game in the series?

It’s interesting how it took ten years of active subscriptions to reach that point. Says a lot about the rest of the series and its cultural draw. But it is a great game, and has only been growing in the past few years. Good on the team for nailing it so well.

Have you seen Squid Game yet? Plus, how do you feel about the show setting a Netflix record as the biggest series launch?

I haven’t seen Squid Game, although I plan to check it out. It’s a strange thing, because as someone into Japanese games and other media the “death game” genre isn’t new to me at all. So to see something like Squid Game hit in a big mainstream sort of way is interesting. Probably tons of people seeing this kind of thing for the first time.

Favorite piece(s) on the site this week, and why?

Morgan turning the Avengers controversy into a longer feature instead of a news piece was an interesting idea. And I think it paid off as an engaging read and bigger picture of why it’s such a big deal.

Playing any fun games this weekend?

Making my way through Shadowbringers still, and I think I’m on pace to meet Endwalker at launch, with room for a break, even! I’m trying to figure out what to settle on for my free time game. I seem to be bouncing between Atelier Sophie and the PSP Persona remake.

Are there any TV, movie, anime, or music recommendations that you’d like to share?

Watched the Star Trek TNG episode “Ethics” with my wife last night. It had a really hokey start, but as the story developed it turned into a really great interconnection of multiple ethical conflicts. Interesting stuff!

Bonus question, if you could design a custom console, what game or design would it feature?

If I could do whatever I wanted, I would probably do a Nintendo Switch dock up with a bunch of jagged bits of metal, tubing and some vaguely organic-looking bits Tetsuo: The Iron Man style.

Thoughts on the Animal Crossing Direct and Nintendo Switch Online news?

I think it’s cool they’re adding so much to Animal Crossing but for some reason the news just doesn’t do much for me. The same goes for NSO news, I think adding N64 games is awesome but there’s nothing in the lineup at the moment to compel me to spend that extra money.

How do you feel about Final Fantasy XIV being the most profitable game in the series?

I think it makes sense given the subscription system, which people have pointed out. But it’s also interesting to think about, and shows why so many companies are looking to offer these kinds of games. I think FFXIV shows how it can be done in a way that fans like and appreciate, so while I’m rambling… I just think it’s neat.

Have you seen Squid Game yet? Plus, how do you feel about the show setting a Netflix record as the biggest series launch?

I have! I think the show is fantastic, though I’ve always been a fan of Korean shows and films and probably would have liked it regardless. I’m also so happy to see films like Parasite win big at the Oscars back in 2020, and now Squid Game being the biggest series launch on Netflix.

I feel like we’re seeing a shift with more people willing to give shows from other countries a try, it helps that Netflix offered so many sub/dub options for Squid Game but still, people are seeing the shows themselves are good. I hope this translates to more people watching Korean shows in general because they’re all worth a watch.

If anyone wants recommendations, I highly recommend It’s Ok To Not Be Ok, Kingdom, Korean Odyssey, and Goblin (though I’m not sure if Goblin is still on Netflix, if it’s not it’s worth finding and watching elsewhere!).

Favorite piece(s) on the site this week, and why?

The preview for Endwalker from Lucas was fantastic, also liked the console lineup features from Josh this weekend!

Playing any fun games this weekend?

Probably not, I’m feeling emotionally not great and think I’ll be spending this weekend resting, maybe going for a walk. Whatever helps, honestly.

Are there any TV, movie, anime, or music recommendations that you’d like to share?

I’m just going to recommend Monsta X again. I feel like one of these days I’ll find a way to convince everyone to join me in my love of Monsta X lol. I mean c’mon they’re the only group that could make a song with lyrics like “alli-alli-alli-alligator” not just good, but really good. Also going to recommend their song Follow if the alligator song doesn’t do it for you.

Bonus question, if you could design a custom console, what game or design would it feature?

I’d love to see an H.R. Giger console design on the PS5, I think the shape of the PS5 would make it look really cool aesthetic wise. Would also love to see Nintendo release a bright pastel Kirby-themed Switch. For Xbox Series X, I think they could do a Matrix theme with the green code that’d look really cool.
