When the first Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare title was announced several years ago, most people wrote it off as just a kids version of Call of Duty that was more shovelware than anything else. However, as soon as consumers got their hands on the product, they quickly realizes that not only was Garden Warfare a very serious and very real game, it was one of the best third-person shooters to release in quite some time. In fact, the only thing that held Garden Warfare back was the fact that PlayStation 4 owners had to wait months before the game was released on the platform. Even then, it was free for a limited time and a lot of PlayStation owners jumped on that deal to experience everything the title had to offer.
Fast-forward to E3 2015 and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 has been announced and is one of the highly anticipated games coming to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The new title takes everything fans know and love about the original and expands on that concept to create what looks to be a far superior product.
The biggest additions to Garden Warfare 2 are the six new combat classes represented by the Imp and Z-Mech, Captain Deadbeard, Citron, Super Brainz, Rose and Kernel Corn. This brings the total number of classes up to 14 and the total number of characters over 100. If you played the original Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare, you can transfer all of your characters and unlocked content into the sequel as soon as the game launches. For now, let’s take a closer look at what some of the new classes have to offer.
Imp and Z-Mech
As the Imp you’re the smallest and most agile character on the battlefield. This makes the Imp harder to hit and a great choice for adept players who can take advantage of the additional maneuverability to avoid incoming fire and still rack up the kills. The Imp can double jump and even hover in the air as he dual-wields his automatic blasters.
When things start to look grim, the Imp can summon the Z-Mech from the sky becoming one of the largest characters in the game and drastically increasing his health in the process. However, with the massive size of the Z-Mech you become a much bigger target and your agility drops as well. This makes it more difficult to avoid incoming fire, but to help compensate you get a huge upgrade to your weapons. The Imp and Z-Mech won’t be for everyone, but in the right hands they’ll be an unstoppable force.
Captain Deadbeard
Every shooter needs to have a sniper of some sort. Okay, so not everyone will agree with that statement, but whether you agree or not, Captain Deadbeard is the sniper in Garden Warfare 2. He can zoom in for epic kills from a distance, but you won’t always have that luxury in Garden Warfare 2. At close range the Captain can still unleash an onslaught of firepower, so don’t worry about enemies closing in on your position. This makes the sniping class a bit more versatile than some other games, which is a welcome change to the typical confines of the class.
Super Brainz
While Super Brainz is considered a close-range melee class, he’s just as versatile as Captain Deadbeard. At close range he has a powerful three-hit melee combo that will inflict considerable damage to anyone unlucky enough to get pummeled by Super Brainz’s fists. However, many of the classes in Plants vs. Zombies have a way to escape should the occasion arise. Fear not, Super Brainz can blast enemies from a distance with his hand laser. You won’t get the same firepower as Captain Deadbeard, but his close-range power more than makes up for anything he may lack from a distance. If you put in enough work at close-range, you’ll only need a few more hits from the hand laser to finish the job!
Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is due to release on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC during the first quarter of 2016.
