Best Surprises at Toy Fair 2018

New Cuphead toys, Dig-Dug Tiny Arcade and Lego’s Kessel Run Millennium Falcon!

Toy Fair 2018 had a variety of big toy reveals for the year, from educational toys the whole family will enjoy to different plushies and sought-after collectibles. That said, we spent some time walking the Javits Center in New York City to catch a glimpse at all the figures and gadgets that everyone’s kids will put on their wish lists. This being Prima Games, we kept a close eye out for everything video game related, but plenty of other toys made our list.

Sadly, the Pikachu you see above is not for sale.

Cuphead Mystery Minis

Following the success of last year’s Cuphead Pop! toys, Funko will introduce the Xbox One game’s characters to its popular Mystery Minis lineup. Due to release this May, the Cuphead Myster Minis set will include such characters as King Dice, Cagney Carnation, Djimmi The Great and, of course, The Devil, among others.

If you’re a Funko fan, then you already know that Cuphead isn’t the first video game to join Mystery Minis. The list already includes Horizon Zero Dawn, Kingdom Hearts and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

Lara Croft Pop!

The new Tomb Raider film comes out on March 16, and Funko has a cool Lara Croft Pop! releasing the same week! This Lara Croft is apparently in homage to her 2013 Tomb Raider reboot video game, and we think she’s a perfect addition to every fan’s collection.

Alien vs Predator Arcade 2-Pack

Capcom’s Alien vs Predator is one of the best arcade games that as of this writing never appeared on a video game console. This 2D side-scrolling shooter/beat-em-up might be in virtual limbo, but at least we’ll be able to buy Neca’s Dutch and Linn 2-Pack at the end of 2018; conspicuous by their absences are release dates for the Predator figures and diorama.

We’d like to think that this 2-Pack announcement is connected to an Alien vs Predator arcade game re-release, but we haven’t heard anything official from Capcom.

Ghosts ‘N Goblins Figures

Super7 brings beloved movies, cartoons, and video games from the 80s and 90s into the toy realm. Up next, we have a collection of Ghosts ‘N Goblins figures from Capcom’s iconic and ruthless arcade and console game; among the lot is, of course, the heroic knight, Arthur. These are part of the ReAction Figure toy line (Street Fighter and Alien are part of this series of figures) and appear to be prototypes. We’ll keep watch for an official release date.

Mega Man Collectible Glasses

Speaking of Super7, the company also has this collection of Mega Man inspired glasses, featuring some of the most popular characters from Capcom’s franchise.

Tiny Arcade – Galaga | Frogger | Dig-Dug

Super Impulse helped make the 2017 holiday season a happy one with Tiny Arcade stocking stuffers, featuring pint-sized recreations of hit arcade games like Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Galaxian. Thankfully the line will expand in 2018 with more beloved coin-op games, including Galaga, Frogger and to capitalize on the Stranger Things Season 2 hype, Dig-Dug!

Lego Star Wars Kessel Run Millennium Falcon

You won’t be able to see Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters until May 25, but Lego will celebrate the arrival of Disney’s newest movie with this impressive Kessel Run Millennium Falcon. This new set, which arrives in April and will sell for $169.99, comes with 1,414 pieces and seven mini figures. Han Solo and Chewbacca, of course, but also Lando Calrissian, a Kessel Droid and a new character named Qi’ra; the final two figures are a mystery. What has fans buzzing, aside from the different paint job, is the inclusion of what may be some sort of escape pod! We’ll find out what it’s used for, presumably, when the film rockets onto theater screens this spring.

Lego Star Wars Yoda’s Hut

Lego did an excellent job with its Carbon-Freezing Chamber from The Empire Strikes Back, and now we have another classic scene from the movie on the way, this Yoda’s Hut playset that includes Master Yoda, Jedi-in-training Luke Skywalker and R2-D2. The last time Lego released a set inspired by Dagobah was all the way back in 2003/2004, so this 229-piece set is welcome indeed.

Playfoam Pals

Playfoam is a cool and sticky alternative to Play-Doh that comes in a variety of colors and doesn’t make a mess. In March, kids will find something cute inside of each Playfoam container, one of 12 animal friends, complete with another set of gold-colored variants; 24 figurines in total.

Educational Insights says that each container comes with a surprise pal, and hopefully it won’t take long or too much money to complete the set.

Exercise Boo

We’re hard-pressed to think of any company that does stuffed animals better than Gund, with toy maker always coming up with different ways to make its products both cute and cuddly. Well, prepare yourself, because Exercise Boo is on the way! This latest version of the world’s cutest dog seems perfect for collector and fitness buffs, but here’s the bad news… Exercise Boo is already sold out, and apparently won’t be back in stock until March.
