3 Games That’ll Make You Buy a Wii U

Pulverize opponents with Kirby, ride through Hyrule and create your own Mario levels.

There’s a chance you purchased a Wii U last month when Mario Kart 8 rolled into stores. If so, congratulations on buying Nintendo’s system. We hope you branched out to other quality games for the console, most notably Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.

Conversely, perhaps you’re still unsure about the machine and need further convincing. Don’t worry. The odds of you picking up a Wii U will increase once these stellar-looking games arrive.

Super Smash Bros.

Might as well start at the top. Barring a surprise announcement, this is Nintendo’s biggest game heading into the holiday season after the 3DS version ships October 3rd. Wii U Smash Bros. killed it at last week’s E3 show and we expect the same level of popularity at the end of 2014. Newcomers like Mega Man, Wii Fit Trainer and Pac-Man square off against series mainstays like Mario, Donkey Kong and Kirby. There’s GameCube controller support with the help of an adapter, online play, Skylanders-inspired action figures that Nintendo refers to as amiibo and several courses built with nostalgia for such games as Punch-Out!! and Pilot Wings. You can’t buy a Wii U without Smash Bros. It’s that simple.

Mario Maker

Millions of people play Super Mario Bros. games. Now it’s time to make their own levels. That sentence alone should have you excited, but wait until you see Mario Maker in action. It takes a few minutes to create a level, filled with coin blocks, goombas, koopa troopas and other familiar Mario items. Chances are you’ll spend hours obsessing over the minute details and sharing your stages with other gamers from around the world. The only downside? We have to wait until 2015 to play it.

The Legend of Zelda Wii U

Some Nintendo fans consider this game the Wii U’s crown jewel, and we can’t necessarily disagree. Little is known about the upcoming Zelda, but the concept of an open world game set within the universe has us crossing our fingers that new info comes sooner than later. The game looks beautiful thus far, with hints of Skyward Sword-like visuals. If riding Link’s horse through the beautiful countryside sounds compelling, and it should, the only console that’ll host the game is Nintendo’s. In the meantime, you have Hyrule Warriors later this year.

Of course, there are plenty of other games making their Wii U debuts, including Bayonetta 2, Splatoon and Captain Toad Treasure Tracker. Bottom line, Nintendo’s system has much to offer.
